The Witch Head Nebula

Explanation: Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble .... maybe Macbeth should have consulted the Witch Head Nebula. A suggestively shaped reflection nebula, this cosmic crone is about 800 light-years away though. Its frightening visage seems to glare toward nearby bright star Rigel in Orion, just off the right edge of this frame. More formally known as IC 2118, the interstellar cloud of dust and gas is nearly 70 light-years across, its dust grains reflecting Rigel's starlight. In this composite portrait, the nebula's color is caused not only by the star's intense bluish light but because the dust grains scatter blue light more efficiently than red. The same physical process causes Earth's daytime sky to appear blue, although the scatterers in planet Earth's atmosphere are molecules of nitrogen and oxygen.

IC 1871: Inside the Soul Nebula

Explanation: This cosmic close-up looks deep inside the Soul Nebula. The dark and brooding dust clouds outlined by bright ridges of glowing gas are cataloged as IC 1871. About 25 light-years across, the telescopic field of view spans only a small part of the much larger Heart and Soul nebulae. At an estimated distance of 6,500 light-years the star-forming complex lies within the Perseus spiral arm of the Milky Way, seen in planet Earth's skies toward the constellation Cassiopeia. An example of triggered star formation, the dense star-forming clouds of IC 1871 are themselves sculpted by the intense winds and radiation of the region's massive young stars. This color image adopts a palette made popular in Hubble images of star-forming regions.

Your Shot community member Donato DiCamillo sought to make a photo of a subject that was both “aesthetically and internally” pleasing. A ride on the Staten Island Ferry afforded him his shot: Ferry riders freely engaged in activities of their own choosing, while the Statue of Liberty seemed to train her protective gaze on the vessel. For DiCamillo, the scene called to mind the theme of self-determination. “My interpretation of the woman sleeping,” he says, “was that of an ‘American dreamer.’”

Massive Black Hole Shreds Passing Star

Explanation: What happens when a star gets too close to a black hole? Recent observations from Earth-orbiting observatories of an event dubbed ASASSN-14li, in a distant galactic center, appears to be giving one star's harrowing story. Although angularly unresolved, variations in high energy light indicate that some of the star became shredded and reformed into a disk swirling around the dark abyss. In the hypothesized scenario envisioned, a jet formed on the spin axis of the black hole. The innermost part of the disk, colored white, glows most strongly in X-rays and may drive a periodic wind, shown in blue. Future X-ray and ultraviolet observations of stellar disruptions by black holes -- including those in the center of our own galaxy -- hold promise of telling us about the complex dynamics of some of the hottest and highest-gravity places in the universe.

On a misty morning in Saint Joe, Arkansas, Terra Fondriest snapped this whimsical image of her daughter playing a piano in the bed of her pickup truck. The piano, purchased at a benefit auction the night before, was a surprise, she says, and her daughter couldn’t wait to try it out. “We had to wait for a friend to come over to help unload,” she explains, “so until then, my daughter [played] tunes while it was in the back of the truck, outdoing all the morning bird chirping and rooster crowing that were also going on.”

Bright from the Heart Nebula

Explanation: What's that inside the Heart Nebula? First, the large emission nebula dubbed IC 1805 looks, in whole, like a human heart. The nebula glows brightly in red light emitted by its most prominent element: hydrogen. The red glow and the larger shape are all created by a small group of stars near the nebula's center. In the center of the Heart Nebula are young stars from the open star cluster Melotte 15 that are eroding away several picturesque dust pillars with their energetic light and winds. The open cluster of stars contains a few bright stars nearly 50 times the mass of our Sun, many dim stars only a fraction of the mass of our Sun, and an absent microquasar that was expelled millions of years ago. The Heart Nebula is located about 7,500 light years away toward the constellation of Cassiopeia. At the top right is the companion Fishhead Nebula.

Yasmin Mund climbed to the top of her Varanasi, India, guesthouse to see the sun rise over the Ganges River, but when she reached the roof, it was another, unexpected scene that caught her by surprise. “I looked over the right-hand side of the balcony, and my jaw dropped with disbelief,” she says. “Below were families—mothers, fathers, children, brothers, sisters, and dogs—all sleeping on the tops of their houses. Charon and the Small Moons of Pluto

Explanation: What do the moons of Pluto look like? Before a decade ago, only the largest moon Charon was known, but never imaged. As the robotic New Horizons spacecraft was prepared and launched, other moons were identified on Hubble images but remained only specks of light. Finally, this past summer, New Horizons swept right past Pluto, photographed Pluto and Charon in detail, and took the best images of Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra that it could. The featured image composite shows the results -- each moon is seen to have a distinct shape, while underlying complexity is only hinted. Even though not satisfyingly resolved, these images are likely to be the best available to humanity for some time. This is because the moons are too small and distant for contemporary Earth-based telescopes to resolve, and no new missions to the Pluto system are planned.

After following a den of foxes in Quebec for an entire summer, Your Shot member Denis Dumoulin knew that the first snowfall would present a unique opportunity to see the animals in a new way. He was right: After a night spent on the ground concealed from their view, he captured this well-earned shot of a young fox learning to hunt. “I [saw] magnificent scenes of training,” Dumoulin says. “All this lasted only a few minutes … [just enough] time to immortalize him.”

Explanation: It was visible around the world. The sunset conjunction of Jupiter and Venus in 2012 was visible almost no matter where you lived on Earth. Anyone on the planet with a clear western horizon at sunset could see them. Pictured above in 2012, a creative photographer traveled away from the town lights of Szubin, Poland to image a near closest approach of the two planets. The bright planets were separated only by three degrees and his daughter striking a humorous pose. A faint red sunset still glowed in the background. Jupiter and Venus will be at it again this week before sunrise, passing under two degree from each other -- and even with bonus planet Mars nearby.

Our buildings use almost half of all our energy!!! It doesn't take Einstein to figure out it's time to make some changes. The USA is way behind Germany, Japan and even China in our Green Building.
But it's not so easy! We can't even figure out how to stop using incandescent bulbs much less make our homes Green !
Here's what's wrong:
- Our homes keep getting bigger and bigger and less efficient
- Construction is done in cheaper methods with shorter life spans
- Sloppier craftsmanship
- Wasteful material usage and poor recycling practices
- Not using Solar Systems like we should
- Wasting gallons of water unnecessarily
- Build homes that work for how we live
- Build Net Zero Homes - that require little or no non renewable energy
- Install more Solar Systems
- Design for today - not 200 years ago!
- Remodel our existing homes to make them 50% more efficient
- Too complicated to figure out Green Building

From the photographer’s vantage point on the bridge wing, the view seems a clever split screen—the swirling blue water contrasting with the solid, vivid red of the deck, and a meticulously clean white line dividing the two. Zay Yar Lin, who submitted this photo, explains the importance of the seafarer’s work: “To facilitate transporting merchandise around the world, the ship has to be maintained in good and efficient condition. Daily maintenance involves hard work such as chipping, scaling, cleaning, and painting.”

Explanation: Two remarkable global maps of Jupiter's banded cloud tops can be compared by just sliding your cursor over this sharp projection (or follow this link) of image data from the Hubble Space Telescope. Both captured on January 19, during back-to-back 10 hour rotations of the ruling gas giant, the all-planet projections represent the first in a series of planned annual portraits by the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy program. Comparing the two highlights cloud movements and measures wind speeds in the planet's dynamic atmosphere. In fact, the Great Red Spot, the famous long-lived swirling storm boasting 300 mile per hour winds, is seen sporting a rotating, twisting filament. The images confirm that Great Red Spot is still shrinking, though still larger than planet Earth. Posing next to it (lower right) is Oval BA, also known as Red Spot Junior.

Alexandre Gendron, who submitted this photo, was at Lake Wanaka in New Zealand capturing images of this well-photographed lone tree when he soon found his inspiration flagging. The solution? Get higher. “I [had taken] too many photographs of this tree,” Gendron says, “[but my friend] suggested I climb a tree to take a photo … from another point of view. It was a brilliant idea, as I’ve never seen any photograph of this tree taken from [15 feet] high.” The result? “Here is the final picture. It’s all about changing your point of view!”

Starburst Galaxy Messier 94

Explanation: Beautiful island universe Messier 94 lies a mere 15 million light-years distant in the northern constellation of the hunting dogs, Canes Venatici. A popular target for earth-based astronomers, the face-on spiral galaxy is about 30,000 light-years across, with spiral arms sweeping through the outskirts of its broad disk. But this Hubble Space Telescope field of view spans about 7,000 light-years or so across M94's central region. The sharp close-up examines the galaxy's compact, bright nucleus and prominent inner dust lanes, surrounded by a remarkable bluish ring of young, massive stars. The massive stars in the ring are all likely less than 10 million years old, indicating the galaxy experienced a well-defined era of rapid star formation. As a result, while the small, bright nucleus is typical of the Seyfert class of active galaxies, M94 is also known as a starburst galaxy. Because M94 is relatively nearby, astronomers can explore in detail reasons for the galaxy's burst of star formation.

It’s not a stretch to understand why it’s known locally as Mosi-Oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders.” The waterfall’s thunderous roar and rising mist can be heard and seen, respectively, from miles away.

Explanation: Sculpted by stellar winds and radiation, the star factory known as Messier 17 lies some 5,500 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation Sagittarius. At that distance, this 1/3 degree wide field of view spans over 30 light-years. The sharp composite, color image, highlights faint details of the region's gas and dust clouds against a backdrop of central Milky Way stars. Stellar winds and energetic light from hot, massive stars formed from M17 stock of cosmic gas and dust have slowly carved away at the remaining interstellar material producing the cavernous appearance and undulating shapes. M17 is also known as the Omega Nebula or the Swan Nebula.

Explanation: The north pole of Saturn's moon Enceladus is unexpectedly fascinating and complex. Previous to the latest flyby of the robotic Cassini spacecraft, the northern region was known mostly for its unusually high abundance of craters. Last week's flyby, however, returned images of unprecedented detail, including the featured image showing the expected craters coupled with an unexpected and circuitous pattern of picturesque cracks and fractures. Broken terrain has been recorded at lower latitudes, with deep canyons dubbed Tiger Stripes near Enceladus' South Pole. The fractures may further indicate global interplay between the surface and potential seas underneath, seas that future missions might target for signs of life.

You see, I’ve been there.

So now, I’m living in my car.
Broke. All alone. In tears. Maybe you’ve been there.
Still, whenever I could, I’d go to free trainings and meetups in my area looking for clues, inspiration, ideas.
At lunch breaks, instead of going out with others to a local restaurant, I’d sneak back a few blocks away to my car alone to eat crackers. I’d spend my days out of the cold in libraries, coffee shops and bookstores.
Anything to pull me out of the hole I was in.
At night, I’d park under a streetlight, wearing my hat, coat and gloves, reading personal development books until my eyes got heavy.
But it didn’t matter how many books I read, the reality of my circumstances was sinking in.

I was truly homeless. I had no money. I was malnourished.
Now if you think I was bitter at this point, the truth is I wasn’t.
Angry? Yes. Frustrated? You bet. Scared? Definitely.
I’ll tell you more about it in a moment, but for now I let me tell you what happened.
It was cold that night. I was in the middle of a Walmart parking lot under a parking light. I’m literally shaking my fist at the sky. Talking to whoever is up there about my plight.
And something hit me. A strange kind of peace I had never experienced before.
I truly, for the first time in my life, felt like I was connected with the universe.
As I looked up at the sky, in the silence of the night, with a billion of stars all around, I was in complete awe. I was humbled.

And that’s when I respectfully, gratefully, in complete
faith, expectation and trust, made a simple request.
You can imagine what my request was. Food.
Just minutes later, literally minutes later, nothing short of a miracle occurred.

A rather affluent-looking woman walked up to me and asked me if everything was alright. She’d seen me yelling at the sky and was concerned.
Embarrassed and caught by surprise, I sheepishly looked down and said “Yes.”
She asked me if I needed anything, and I replied I could use a small bite to eat.
A small bite to eat?! Of course, I was STARVING, but I’m not one to beg. She walked with me over to a 24-hour convenience store and said I could buy whatever we could both carry back to my car.
Can you imagine?
I hadn’t had real food in days and here she was paying for what must have been $50 in groceries.
She was an angel. I was so grateful.
To this day, that peace has never left me.

Now, if you’re listening right now, you may think that was the day I hit bottom.
Actually, that day was probably the greatest day of my life.
Why? Because looking back, that was the day when I knew. I *knew* everything was going to turn out alright.
Maybe listening to my words, you’ve experienced a similar feeling.
In my case, I had finally discovered how to communicate with the universe.
