The Congo River, which connects nine African countries along its nearly 3,000-mile journey to the Atlantic Ocean, is the main road through the heart of Africa. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Wagenia fishermen still craft enormous traps to snare fish in the roiling rapids outside of Kisangani, just as they did when the explorer Henry Morton Stanley first observed them during his famous voyage down the river in 1877.
