While climbing a mountain to catch a sunrise in Nara, Japan, Your Shot photographer Yoshiki Fujiwara encountered this young male deer. In the Nara Prefecture of Japan, deer are free to roam—especially in Nara Park, where a herd of approximately 1,200 wanders freely and happily on the grounds of a temple. In the Shinto religion, deer are considered messengers of the gods—a reason they are so well protected.
