Let the irony sink in: when discussing states with the highest amount of average debt per individual, apparently Washington, D.C. residents lead the way. According to a joint graphic put together by visual agency Column Five and global information services company Experianthe average individual debt in Washington, D.C. comes out to $30,444.

The heat map (see below) essentially summarizes the financial health of the entire nation, breaking it down by state and large metros. Utilizing a color coded map, the darker red states note a higher average debt, including a sum of credit cards, auto loans and personal/student loans (no mortgages).
